The Function of 'Red Light' Behavior

The 'red light' behavior on the SAVI grid is defined as "avoidance behavior in relationship to the goal of communication which is information transfer" in Autobiography of a Theory (pg. 49). Yet, at the workshop this weekend we talked about the function of 'red light' behavior bringing information into the system. So, I'm curious as to whether or not 'red light' behavior is behavior to move away from at all costs, or can it, in fact, serve a productive function in certain contexts? Anyone else...

  1. Are you asking if it might be effective sometimes to purposefully use Red Light behavior? That it might not be something we feel we always need to avoid?

  2. During the weekend, we identified 'positives' and 'negatives' of each category, and a positive of some of the 'red light' behaviors included 'putting information into the system'. It might have been helpful to clarify that just a bit. For example, while information may be placed into the system with 'red light' behavior, I wonder if it shouldn't be a goal to communicate the same information using 'yellow' or 'green'. In fact, that would have been an interesting excercise. Take information that tends to elicit emotionally charged 'red light' behavior (e.g. deep frustration, deep fear)and figure out how to communicate the same information using 'yellow' or 'green', and whether the application of such a strategy is appropriate for every situation.
